On February 14, 2018, Winston "Mac" Franklin MacKenzie of Camrose, Alberta, formerly of Calgary and Vauxhall, Alberta, passed away surrounded by family at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose at the age of 76 years.


Winston was raised on a sheep ranch in Vauxhall. Growing up he played many sports and was a member of the school band. He then served five years in the Radar Branch on several ships of the Canadian Navy, and three years in Calgary Police force and other endeavors before attending university and becoming a teacher. He taught for 27 years in the Battle River School Division where he also served as President of Battle River Local No. 32 and as an employee board member of the Alberta School Employee Benefit Plan for many of those years. During his teaching career, he coached extracurricular junior/senior high school sports, enjoyed doing a variety of artwork and crafts, mural painting in Edberg School and was a keen curler, ball player, avid collector, fisherman, and gardener.


Winston is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patti and children: Bill (Sherry Porsnuk) of Stony Plain, Mark (Jackie) of Beaumont and Matthew of Camrose; five grandchildren: Justin (Astou Faye), Marissa (Kent Ruggles), Amanda (Kyle McLean, Rebecca (Nathen) Comer all of Edmonton, Noah MacKenzie-Freeman of Camrose; two great-grandchildren: Nala MacKenzie and Asher Comer of Edmonton.


Also to mourn his loss is his brother Allen of Kelowna, his Aunt Margit (Mikalson) Burns of Blairmore, brother-in-law Michael (Carol) Webb of Mayerthorpe, sister-in-law Barbara Webb, brothers-in-law Richard Webb of Camrose and Denis (Sheila) Webb of Edmonton, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. Winston was predeceased by parents Donald and Myrtle (Mikalson) MacKenzie, sister Muriel Holoboff and sister-in-law Maggie Mackenzie.


Cremation has taken place and a family memorial will be held at a future date in the spring.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Winston’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the charity of one’s choice.
