Obituary of Ella May Burnstad

Ella May Burnstad of Camrose, Alberta was born at Kingman, Alberta on June 3, 1928. She passed away in Camrose at the Louise Jensen Centre at the age of 93 years.

 

She was born to William and Sarah Wideman and was the youngest of seven boys and eight girls.

Ella May attended Farmington elementary school and then went to Hesston, Kansas to complete her high school. She received her nursing Diploma in La Junta, Colorado in 1956. She worked in the Tofield Hospital, was the Director of Nursing at Bethany Auxiliary Hospital, and worked in the Tofield Nursing Home. Ella May expressed nursing was an opportunity of service and very rewarding. 

 

On August 15, 1957 Ella May was united in marriage to George Washington Roth. Added to the union was George’s son, Allen. George died suddenly on June 14, 1963. Ella was left with 4 small children and 8 months pregnant. After raising her children for 18 years, she married Garnet Burnstad on March 21, 1981. Garnet died on July 20, 2017.

 

Ella May was a faithful member of the Tofield Salem Mennonite Church and was baptized into faith in her youth. Ella May’s trust in God and her Saviour Jesus Christ sustained her throughout her life.

 

Her interests included Bible study, gathering with family and friends, reading, sewing circle, golfing, fishing, traveling all over, especially to see her family in North Dakota and Kansas and spending the winters in Arizona. Most of all she loved people. She poured herself into her beloved children and spouses and grandchildren/great-grandchildren. She was a friend to all showing unconditional love.

 

Left to cherish Ella May’s memory are her children Elizabeth (Clark) Slater of Esmond, North Dakota, Bonnie (Vaughn) Toews of New Norway, John (Karen) Roth of Manhattan Kansas, Joan (Troy) Ferner of Camrose, Virginia (Glen) Olsen of Hay Lakes, and her step-children Allen Roth of Penticton, BC, Rosemarie Sware of Ft Saskatchewan, Judy (Don) Wideman of Camrose, Brian (Elaine) Burnstad of Ft Saskatchewan,  29 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Florence King, of Carstairs and brother-in-law Noris (Elaine) Burnstad of Edmonton.

 

Ella May was predeceased by her husbands George Roth and Garnet Burnstad, 3 grandchildren, Aaron, Andrew and Adam; great-grandson Samuel; her parents and all of her 14 siblings.

 

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the many acts of kindness towards Ella May and her children throughout the years.

A public visitation will be held at 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2021 at Weber's Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose.  Please remain in your vehicle until directed to enter the funeral home. 

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Salem Mennonite Church, Tofield, AB (one mile North of the intersection of Twp. Rd. 492 and Rg. Rd. 184).  Friends and extended family are welcome to show their support to the family by driving into the church parking lot where a FM Radio transmission (93.1FM) of the service will be available.  The funeral will also be recorded and posted to the Weber Funeral Home website after the funeral is over.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Mennonite Central Committee.
