Ray Megli of New Norway was released from his suffering on Jan 27, 2022 at the age of 93. Ray was born Jan 11, 1929 at Swalwell, AB and grew up with 3 brothers and 6 sisters. Susanna Boese was his woman of choice and they were married in January 1951. For 70 years they embraced companionship, adventure, hardship and joy. Ray was predeceased by Susanna 9 months ago. They began married life at a logging camp at Spray Lakes (by Canmore) but shortly thereafter they sold it and bought a farm at Linden. We remember well the stories of being hailed out 3 years in a row and being forced to be creative in making the mortgage payments. Perhaps that was the first training ground for taking on challenge, measuring risk and learning to enjoy it! In 1959 they bought land in Edberg/New Norway area. Year after year they put down roots both in the soil and in their community. Ray always sought to reach out to others by extending hospitality, sitting on various boards and volunteering time and energy. In 1971 Ray, Susanna and their 6 children hopped on a plane to fulfill a life-long dream of his to go to Australia. At the end of 6 months there they had bought land and had their 7th child. For the next 38 years they travelled back and forth, farming in Alberta in summer and Australia in winter. Our home was enriched by diversity in friends, neighbours and travellers that came through.
Our father - the man that was in so many ways the legend for us, by whom we formed our world view: God first, people second. He was a busy international farmer/businessman but we often said his hobby was people. Nothing brought him more satisfaction than knowing he had contributed to someone's sense of worth and well being. He leaves for us an example of hard work, generosity and grace. He embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ with all his heart and even in his dementia and resulting confusion he held his faith close. His chains are gone...he's been set free...See you on the other side Dad.
Left to cherish his memory are his 7 children: Dale and Leslie Megli, Australia; Ruth Boettger, Camrose; Jay Megli, Camrose; Ladean and Kelvin Isaac, New Norway; Rita (Rob) Johnson, Daysland, Ivy and Kevin Birch, New Norway; Robyn and Shane Smith, Camrose. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren Joel (Nicole) Megli, Mckinney and Ivy. Kim (Simon) Pain, Ellie, Hamish, and Alby Jack. Rueben (Nicole) Boettger. Kajsa Isaac; Matt (Amy), Karl, Blakely and Harvey Isaac; Jamie (Arron Hundeby), Brook, Jace and Ellie; Craig (Kristina) Isaac, Jacob and Audrey. Nolan, Lindzy, Jasmine (Christian) DeBruyn and Shaylyn Johnson. Jessica (Iwan) Hiebert, Katy Sue and Beka Birch. Sami (Joshua) Laferriere, Josh and Josie Smith. Siblings Viola (Jake) Boese, Irvin (Irma) Megli, Ethel (Noah) Toews, Orville (Helen) Megli, Edith (Howard) Reimer and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
A private family funeral service will be held on Sunday February 6, 2022. Interment took place at the Highland Park Cemetery, New Norway.
